The Belgian National Internet eXchange

The BNIX is the place where Internet Service Providers (ISP's), Content Providers and other Business Users can exchange IP-traffic ('peer') with each other in Belgium. The BNIX was created in 1995 by BELNET, the Belgian National Research Network.

Since the connections between the ISP's connected to the BNIX use faster, uncongested and cheaper links, the BNIX dramatically improves the quality of the local connections for their users and thus the speed of accessing Internet resources.

Technically, the BNIX is built around a distributed layer-2 switched medium consisting of Ethernet switches connected to each other with 10Gbps Ethernet technology, providing high-speed, congestion-free interconnections between participating ISP's.

The BNIX-network is at present set up between two housing locations: InterXion and Level(3)

There are currently more than 40 members connected to the BNIX.

The BNIX allows the exchange of IP multicast traffic (MBNIX). IPv6 connections are also possible

BNIX is one of the Charter Members of Euro-IX, the Association of European Internet Exchanges.
