The Belgian National Internet eXchange The BNIX is the place where ISP's can exchange traffic with each other in Belgium. It was created in 1995 by BELNET, the Belgian National Research Network. Since the connections between the ISP's connected to the BNIX use faster, uncongested and cheaper links, the BNIX dramatically improves the quality of the local connections for their users and thus the speed of accessing Internet resources. The BNIX is open to alternative telecommunications operators. Different telcos already have an optical introduction into the BNIX locations, and more are expected in the near future. They provide the BNIX with an abundant source of bandwidth. Technically, the BNIX is built around a distributed layer-2 switched medium consisting of Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet switches connected to each other with Tengigabit Ethernet technology, providing high-speed, congestion-free interconnections between participating ISP's There are currently more than 40 ISP's connected to the BNIX. Since August 1999, the BNIX allows the exchange of IP multicast traffic (MBNIX) and in October 2000 BNIX also introduced IPv6 interconnections (BNIX6). In 2001 BNIX deployed two additional housing locations: InterXion and Level(3)
